Midtown Caboose (Tallahassee, FL) Review
By William Kristoph
Rain washed out our baseball plans last Sunday, but pushed us into Midtown Caboose for an early lunch. It came highly recommended by a couple of different friends in the relatively short time since it opened. My wife and I checked out the latest Well’s Bros offering in Tallahassee prior to the lunch rush and we were very pleased with our decision. The food at Midtown Caboose is great.
Parking, like is the prerequisite for all good Tallahassee restaurants, sucks. It’s tight, especially when the restaurant is busy. Be prepared to stalk a parking space for a few minutes. Inside, the restaurant definitely has that train / train station feel. The staff is friendly and seated us quickly. There are plenty of HDTVs spread out around the restaurant. The tables and chairs are spartan: steely, cold and uncomfortable. That’s all irrelevant to the food, of course. And the food is what I truly care about.
First, Midtown Caboose is not for your light lunch affairs. It’s unapologetically fried, large and high calorie. It’s perfect if you want a take home box with half of your meal. The menu is large, but my wife and I settled on an appetizer of the Peppercorn Goat Cheese. Then, she went for The Mac Daddy burger and I asked the waiter if the S’More Than Words was worth a shot. He said that he had tried it and couldn’t finish it, but it was worth a look at least once. I decided to go for it.
Tangy, peppery and served with warm pita slices. The Peppercorn Goat Cheese is a creamy way to start a meal.
My wife ate The Mac Daddy in two shifts. The first half at Midtown Caboose and the second half for dinner at home. She said it was great. My bite was tasty, with a perfectly cooked burger, excellent roll, a bit of fried pickle and mac and cheese.
My main star for lunch was the S’More Than Words. The best was I can describe the S’More Than Words is that I didn’t want to like it, but it tasted good. It’s one of those things that I took a bite of and thought, “I really don’t want to eat this. This isn’t right.” Then I take another bite and think, “Yep, this tastes pretty good, but it’s not right.” Bite three put me into a food coma. I’m not sure what happened but my cleaned plate startled me the next time I checked.
Overall, I rated Midtown Caboose “I Like It” on Urbanspoon. It’s an interested place to sit and eat, with the decor evoking a train car and train station. The menu is large, as are the portions and the burgers are exactly as ordered. Go with a large appetite or be ready to take a box home for later.
