I don’t understand why Red Velvet Cake is such a big deal. Does having it in ice cream form make it a bigger deal? It seems like every time I read about desserts someone is raving about Red Velvet this or that. Yes, it’s tasty, but I don’t see what is so special about it. Thanks to all of the information about Red Velvet bombarding me lately, I decided to check it out Blue Bell style with some Blue Bell Red Velvet Cake Ice Cream.

Ready. Set. Cupcake! Batter and Frosting

Chocolate cake batter and frosting from Ready. Set. Cupcake!

By William Kristoph

I love getting an email about of the blue asking me to test a product, especially when that product is chocolate cupcake mix and chocolate buttercream frosting. On Saturday, I took a box of Ready. Set. Cupcake batter and frosting out of my freezer and got working on baking a dozen cupcakes for my wife, my mother-in-law and me to enjoy. Ready. Set. Cupcake! promises all natural ingredients and very minimal cleanup. It’s frozen and in piping bags, so there’s no mess to clean up.

The second new (for me) flavor from Blue Bell this month is Mocha Almond Fudge. I thought I’d give it a shot, even though I’m not a huge fan of coffee ice cream. Here’s a quick look at what I thought.

Blue Bell Review – Mint Cookies ‘n Cream

By William Kristoph

Occasionally, I review stuff other than restaurants. Since I like food, it’s an easy topic write about. Without further ado, here are my thoughts on Blue Bell’s latest and greatest ice cream, Mint Cookies ‘n Cream.

Blue Bell Mint Cookies ‘n Cream Ice Cream Review

I’m a member of the Blue Bell Country Club, so I get an occasional email from Blue Bell about new flavors or which rotational flavors are in store this month. Normally I try to take a break from my ice cream consumption this time of year, since I’ve usually hammered away plenty of Christmas Cookies Ice Cream, Gingerbread House Ice Cream and Peppermint Ice Cream. Blue Bell, had other ideas for me evidently. Not too long ago, my inbox touted Blue Bell’s newest flavor “Mint Cookies ‘n Cream.” Big deal, I thought. I’ve had Mint Ice Cream before. I’ve had Cookies ‘n Cream. I’ve even had some really great stuff from Publix called Cool Mint Cookies.

What Should Tallahassee Eat? – Joe Mama’s Wood Fired Pizza

***Disclaimer: The Tallahassee Food Blogger’s Association was invited to tour and taste test Joe Mama’s Wood Fired Pizza. As part of it, I personally sampled pizza and salad for free. In no way did anyone at Joe Mama’s ask or imply that it should influence this review.***

TFBA Meetup

As part of the first ever #TFBA meetup, we were able to tour Joe Mama’s Wood Fired Pizza, check out the kitchen and talk with Devon, one of the owner-managers in Tallahassee (along with her brother) and Jim, her dad, the creator and owner of the original Joe Mama’s Wood Fired Pizza in Port St. Joe, FL. Devon greeted and seated us with a smile and a ton of info about Joe Mama’s Pizza. The restaurant is beautifully decorated, featuring a modern feel with black and white photography of local areas. The wood fired oven is visible from the dining area, as is the bar area. I’m normally not one to comment on atmosphere, but Joe Mama’s is the only pizzeria that I feel would make for a romantic date night. It fits the Mid Town area and target audience perfectly.

Devon introduced her father, Jim, who laid out the Joe Mama’s Wood Fired Pizza way and gave us a background of the original Port Saint Joe location and this new Tallahassee location. Fresh, local and quality is the best I can sum it up. Top it off by cooking it in a wood fired pizza oven imported from Italy and the owners’ passion for food really shines. Jim and Devon filled us in about anything and everything and had us tour both the oven area and the kitchen. I personally thought they way they roll and stretch their dough was interesting. There is no tossing at Joe Mama’s Wood Fired Pizza, unless it’s the salad made at your table!
