I decided to try BurgerFi to see what the hype is about. A short trip over to the old Miracle Plaza with a small adventure involving trying to find a parking space (look behind the buildings) and I was ready to head in and order. Inside, I had a few minutes to look around while I waited in line. BurgerFi follows the seemingly standard upscale fast food burger joint decor. Metal, wood and the unfinished look flooring complete with music that is a bit too loud.
Rain washed out our baseball plans last Sunday, but pushed us into Midtown Caboose for an early lunch. It came highly recommended by a couple of different friends in the relatively short time since it opened. My wife and I checked out the latest Well’s Bros offering in Tallahassee prior to the lunch rush and we were very pleased with our decision. The food at Midtown Caboose is great.
Parking, like is the prerequisite for all good Tallahassee restaurants, sucks. It’s tight, especially when the restaurant is busy. Be prepared to stalk a parking space for a few minutes. Inside, the restaurant definitely has that train / train station feel. The staff is friendly and seated us quickly. There are plenty of HDTVs spread out around the restaurant. The tables and chairs are spartan: steely, cold and uncomfortable. That’s all irrelevant to the food, of course. And the food is what I truly care about.
First, Midtown Caboose is not for your light lunch affairs. It’s unapologetically fried, large and high calorie. It’s perfect if you want a take home box with half of your meal. The menu is large, but my wife and I settled on an appetizer of the Peppercorn Goat Cheese. Then, she went for The Mac Daddy burger and I asked the waiter if the S’More Than Words was worth a shot. He said that he had tried it and couldn’t finish it, but it was worth a look at least once. I decided to go for it.
Thanks to a tweet about hamburgers, I worked up a craving for the delicious slab of meat known as a cheeseburger. The sign on Apalachee Parkway called me for weeks, so I finally stopped in to try the recently opened Mikey’s Grill. Mikey’s is located next to Chipotle in the same shopping center as World Market and Best Buy. And thanks to that, there’s ample parking at a local burger place! It’s a minor miracle!
Mikey’s decorating takes Spartan to a new level. Chairs, tables, metal and a bit of wood is Mikey’s Grill style of choice. Plastic baskets and utensils with Styrofoam cups make for an easy cleanup. Mikey’s is large, with plenty of lunch rush seating and an excellent ordering process from the burger window, to the condiments and toppings bar and finally the cashier. It’s quick and to the point, like all good fast food burgers.
Wendy’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers (Apalachee Parkway) Review
By William Kristoph
I’m reviewing Wendy’s? Really? Yes, yes I am. Why? Because, I tried one of those pretzel-bun hamburgers a couple of weeks ago and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My wife and I grabbed a quick lunch at Wendy’s on Apalachee Parkway a few weeks ago and we both decided to grab a Pretzel Bacon Cheeseburger. For a fast food hamburger, it was excellent thanks to that special bun! On top of that, Wendy’s seems to have received a new coat of paint and a big cleanup on the inside. It was a great improvement from my last trip there.
So what’s up with that Pretzel Bacon Cheeseburger? Check it out.
Two favorites, tacos and burgers, unite in this recipe. My wife likes to make fun of my food “crush” aka the “How Sweet It Is” blog. She likes to joke, yes, but she also likes it when she is the beneficiary of a recipe from there. Last week, How Sweet posted Taco Rubbed Burgers with avocado and crushed tortilla chips. I HAD to try them. I love tacos. I LOVE hamburgers. I even love avocado on my burger normally. This burger sounded like a perfect opportunity to visit burger-heaven for a few minutes.
I’m not much for creativity. I’d rather make everyone else’s recipes and tweak them a bit to my liking. So, I didn’t use the above recipe to the letter. I made a few changes which I list below. I also don’t claim that I am a great cook, but I hope that you try this burger. It’s definitely a flavorful spin on a favorite food.
What I changed from the original Taco-Rubbed Burgers recipe:
