Shermag Chocolate Glider Combo Review

Shermag Chocolate Glider Combo

The finished Shermag Glider and Ottoman

Our latest purchase for the nursery was a Shermag Glider and Ottoman (in chocolate) from Babies R Us. We decided to take a risk on the combo despite some mixed reviews on the BRU website. I’m very happy that we did!

Purchase

The buying experience at Babies R Us was excellent. Staff was very helpful in placing an order and told us that it would arrive for store pickup in 7-14 days. Actual shipping time was around 7 days. Babies R Us gave us a call as soon as it arrived. I picked up the item in about 10 minutes at the store. Staff was friendly and helpful and made sure I didn’t have to wait very long.

Packaging

The Shermag Glider is packed in a big box. My only complaint, which is my standard complaint for boxed furniture that has cushions, is that they warn against using a box cutter because the cushions sit on top. I used one very carefully anyway to get the box open. I just wish they could place a top piece of cardboard over the cushions so that there was less risk of cutting into a cushion.

The screws, dowels and bolts arrive with instructions in a separate plastic bag that attached to the box. It is an excellent way to package the screws and made them easy to find. Plenty of Styrofoam and wrapping protected the wood pieces well. Overall, it was easy to sort everything and get started on assembly.

Assembly

The assembly is pretty easy. The instructions document the parts well. I needed help holding the base of the glider together while I lined up the four pieces that connect it. Other than that step, I was able to assemble the glider and ottoman without needing another person. As always, take your time reading and re-reading the instructions with furniture like this. It will save you a lot of headaches later on!

The arm cushions snap into place and have pockets. The back cushion ties to the back of the chair and the bottom slides into place. It makes it all very easy to wipe down. The locking mechanism is a very nice feature. The ottoman was also easy to assemble and glides nicely with the chair. The fit and finish of the entire product was better than I expected. The entire package is a very good value.

Overall

From start to finish, I’m very happy overall with the product and the purchasing experience at Babies R Us. The Shermag Glider Combo is a good value and balance of quality vs price. Can you spend more on a higher quality glider that you can pass down to your kids? Sure. If you’d rather get a great value that should last you through a couple of children and plenty of nights rocking a new baby, then the Shermag will get the job done while looking very nice in a nursery.

South Shore Savannah Changing Table in Espresso Review

My wife and I weren’t thrilled with the standard changing table options. We’re about useful pieces of furniture and an open bottomed changing table didn’t fit our requirements. I searched around online and found the Savannah Changing Table in Espresso by South Shore. It looked like a good value for the price, and I don’t mind assembling furniture so we decided to give it a try. I’m very happy we did.

My Advice For Particle Board Type Furniture:

  • Lay everything out ahead of time, like pieces with like pieces. It takes extra time up front, but you save time as you put the piece together.
  • Don’t move particle board based furniture around a lot, and when you need to move it use carpet sliders. Moving inexpensive furniture has always caused me more problems than the furniture is worth.
  • Read and re-read the instructions. They’re usually clear if you pay attention.
  • Take your time!
South Shore Savannah Changing Table Espresso Assembly

Lay everything out before you start assembly!

Overall, the Savannah Changing Table looks great. The instructions are clear. All parts are packaged well (Amazon shipped it in its original packaging which is well protected) and required only a hammer and a screwdriver for assembly. I expected to take over three hours to assemble the Savannah Changing Table, but I knocked it out in an easier-than-expected 2:15. That time includes my mix up of how to face the rear part of one of the drawers. The back “cardboard” pieces fit the unit well. Be careful with the finishing nails used on the back of the unit or you can miss your intended target and crack the interior finish.

The parts were well packaged

My biggest dislike with the South Shore Savannah Changing Table is the bottom finishing piece and how it attached to the sides. It uses a plastic connector that hammers in. I had a difficult time trying to get the trim piece flush with the sides. Ultimately, I’d rather have some sort of bracket that uses screws for attaching the piece. It’s a minor issue for the value. Overall, I’m happy with our new changing table.

Fully assembled it looks great and the finish matches our Graco Lauren Crib (also in Espresso)!
