I don’t understand why Red Velvet Cake is such a big deal. Does having it in ice cream form make it a bigger deal? It seems like every time I read about desserts someone is raving about Red Velvet this or that. Yes, it’s tasty, but I don’t see what is so special about it. Thanks to all of the information about Red Velvet bombarding me lately, I decided to check it out Blue Bell style with some Blue Bell Red Velvet Cake Ice Cream.

Ender’s Game

By William Kristoph

Thanks to a friend, I dove into Ender’s Game (and now Speaker for the Dead) a couple of weeks ago. They’re relatively quick reads and Ender’s Game, specifically, was a bunch of fun. Not too hard on the brain, but hard enough to make me go, “Hmm” plenty of times. In fact, it’s probably in my Top 5 favorite books. I thought I’d put some thoughts here for why it’s made my Top 5.

  • I love to read Sci-Fi that is older, to see what guesses the author (in this case Orson Scott Card) got right or wrong. Card got a lot right back in 1977 and 1985, from the “desks” (iPads / tablets) to the “nets” (basically a version of blogs on the internet).
  • I enjoyed Ender’s struggle with his aggression versus his desire to not use that aggression.
  • The cast of characters had just the right amount of depth to them. I didn’t need to know everything about Ender’s buddies or family, but Card threw me enough information about each character to keep me from asking, “Why?” too often.
  • Epic space battles.
  • The end. I won’t specify in case someone reading this hasn’t read the book, but the ending surprised me. I thoroughly enjoy when I don’t see the end of a story long before I reach it. Ender’s Game didn’t disappoint me.

Blue Bell - Italian Cream Cake Ice Cream

The latest and greatest from Blue Bell: Italian Cream Cake ice cream.

As a member of Blue Bell’s “Country Club” I get a heads up about their new flavors. A couple of weeks ago, Blue Bell sent out an email about Italian Cream Cake’s availability. I checked the freezer at Publix on Saturday and found a half-gallon ready for my taking. Saturday night, I broke out the coffee mug and tossed in a couple of scoops. How was it?

Blue Bell Review: Caramel Turtle Cheesecake

By William Kristoph

Late last week I picked up a half-gallon of Blue Bell Caramel Turtle Cheesecake. Blue Bell brought this flavor out of retirement after conducting a contest online last year where members of their club could vote for a retired flavor to make a comeback. I didn’t vote for Caramel Turtle Cheesecake, but I decided to try it out when I spotted it at Publix.

Ready. Set. Cupcake! Batter and Frosting

Chocolate cake batter and frosting from Ready. Set. Cupcake!

By William Kristoph

I love getting an email about of the blue asking me to test a product, especially when that product is chocolate cupcake mix and chocolate buttercream frosting. On Saturday, I took a box of Ready. Set. Cupcake batter and frosting out of my freezer and got working on baking a dozen cupcakes for my wife, my mother-in-law and me to enjoy. Ready. Set. Cupcake! promises all natural ingredients and very minimal cleanup. It’s frozen and in piping bags, so there’s no mess to clean up.
