Tomato Land Review (Tallahassee, FL)
By William Kristoph
Last week I ventured out to Tomato Land on Thomasville Road. I’ve heard so many good things about the food that my expectations were possibly a bit too high. Also, I apologize to the readers, I forgot to take pictures in my haste to scarf down lunch. You’ll have to take my word on this particular review, instead of seeing it for yourself.
Fried Green Tomato Po Boy
The Fried Green Tomato Po Boy is Tomato Land’s fried green tomatoes with remoulade sauce, bacon, and avocado on a fresh hoagie roll. I wanted to love it. Staff made it with care and handed it to me with a smile. But, it fell flat on my taste buds. The avocado masked the remoulade sauce to the point that I couldn’t taste it. The bacon was plentiful but bland. The few slices of fried green tomatoes were an afterthought. The hoagie was fresh, chewy and overall very good. In fact, the bread was the highlight of the sandwich. It was far from the worst sandwich I’ve had, but it wasn’t anything memorable. I was flat-out told my Mr. Sweet Tea & Bourbon himself that I should have ordered a special, but I feel like a place with tomato in the name should feature really awesome tomato sandwiches.
Chocolate Layer Cake
On the bright side, the slice of chocolate layer cake I ate was very good. The cake was light and air with plenty of flavor. The chocolate icing had something special that I can’t figure out. It seemed to have a bit of nuttiness too it that kept the chocolate interesting instead of too sweet. This was definitely the highlight of my Tomato Land lunch.
Like it or Not?
Overall, I was just disappointed. Maybe I bought into too much hype and expected too much? Maybe I need to go back and check out a daily special to get a better feel for what Tomato Land does best? I might try it again someday, but I’m not in a hurry. I had to rate Tomato Land as “I didn’t like it” on Urbanspoon, but I hope you try it with better results.
