Voodoo Dog Review (Tallahassee, FL)
Looking for Tallahassee’s best hot dog? Look no further than the funky little Voodoo Dog in the All Saints District near Florida State University. I finally checked it out last week after numerous recommendations from friends, co-workers and Twitter followers. Voodoo Dog definitely lived up to its reputation of being fast and very tasty.
The Jefferson Voodoo Hot Dog and Cheese Fries
When I arrived at 4:30 on Friday, Voodoo Dog was basically empty. Instead of looking through the huge blackboard behind the counter trying to figure out what I wanted to eat, I asked the girl at the counter. She recommended The Jefferson, a Voodog Dog (a bacon-wrapped hot dog) with Mac n Cheese on top. I ordered that and some cheese fries and sat down at a table to mess around on Twitter.
Within a few minutes the fries were ready and delivered to my table. Did I need cheese fries? No. Were they great? Heck yes. Normally, I’m not a fan of “pump cheese” sauce, but Voodoo Dog’s cheese sauce has an extra spice too it that made it have flavor that I thoroughly enjoyed. After a few fries, my Jefferson arrived. Heart attack on a bun might be a better name, but I took a deep breath and decided that I would power through this beautiful work of food. Mild, cheesy and gooey Mac n Cheese topped a perfectly cooked, juicy, bacon-wrapped, red hot dog. It needed no extra condiments and tasted great as a stand alone hot dog.
If I had one complaint (I don’t really) it’s that the bun is nothing spectacular or exciting. In one sense, I like that it’s just a vessel for a really great hot dog. On the other hand, there’s a missed opportunity for a superb gourmet hot dog. I’m not complaining, just making a point.
Voodoo Dog lived up to high expectations and I can’t wait to return to try another hot dog, or one of their large hamburgers. I rated Voodoo Dog “I like it” on Urbanspoon.
