The Cuban Grill (Tallahassee, FL) Review
Cuban food is one of those things that I like to eat, but I rarely seek it out. I forget about Tallahassee’s other offerings usually, through no fault of their own. I just don’t immediately think, “Hey I want Cuban food.” I used to seek it out, back when there was a wonderful place on Tennessee Street called, Carlos Cuban Cafe. But, when Carlos retired and closed shop, I lost my cravings. However, Carlos is BACK, thank God! The location is different (near Esposito’s), but Carlos and his food are just as good as before!
My wife and I stopped in for an early dinner while The Cuban Grill was basically empty. Carlos was behind the counter ready to cook and greeted us with a huge smile. We placed our order and sat down in a booth. In no time, my wife and I had piping hot dinner ready in front of us.
Arroz con pollo
My wife likes Cuban dinners over a sandwich, so she went with the Arroz con pollo. Carlos piled on the chicken and rice. It was very juicy and well seasoned. My wife offered up a bite and took her up on it. It was excellent, and if I was in the mood for a dinner instead of a sandwich I’d probably go with that.
As a side, my wife and I tried the Yuca Frita. All I can say is that it’s like having big steak fries in texture, but the flavor of Yuca is so much better. Hot and fried nicely, the Yuca is something I’d get every time I go to The Cuban Grill.
I ordered a side of Tostones, because they’re my favorite part about Cuban food. While some will find them bland and would rather have the sweet style, I find nothing better than having some Tostones on the side to cleanse my palate. These were perfect for having a bite or two to reset my taste buds to enjoy my main course even more.
Cuban Sandwich Combo
My main course was a The Cuban Grill’s Cuban Sandwich. Pressed thin, pickle, ham, mayo: my mouth is water now. The only mistake that I made was ordering a 12 inch (which is HUGE). A half order combo would serve me fine next time. The black beans and rice were a nice addition to the combo and helped to round out my meal.
I really enjoyed my experience at The Cuban Grill and so did my wife. We were lucky enough to eat while Carlos had some time to chat. He’s a fun guy to talk to and my wife even shared a story with him about how his food at the old place was so good that she still talks about it, even though she ate it on the worst date she ever had. Carlos’ food was so good it trumps a bad date story! I’m glad Carlos is back making good food at The Cuban Grill. I like it so much that I added it as a Favorite on Urbanspoon.
