What Should Tallahassee Eat? – Uptown Cafe

By William Kristoph

Uptown Cafe & Catering Review – Tallahassee, FL

On a recent Saturday my wife and I made our way over to Uptown Cafe on the corner of Miccosukee Rd and Magnolia Dr. Uptown Cafe is one of those places that I’ve driven by hundreds of times over the years, but never stopped in. I decided to change that and cross another restaurant off of my Urbanspoon wishlist. My wife and I both enjoyed our breakfast a bunch, and my gut feeling is that Uptown Cafe might be the best bang for the buck at breakfast in Tallahassee. The amount of food we ate for under $20 was a pleasant surprise based on my experiences with other restaurants in town.

I wanted a lighter main dish for breakfast, since I wanted to sample a bit of this and that in addition to my meal. The Veggie Omelette was an excellent choice. First off, it’s much larger than I expected. Veggies and cheese packed the omelette. The eggs were perfectly done. I ate every last bite. Paired with some decaf coffee, it gave me a very happy stomach, but left enough room for me to sample some other things.

Banana Bread

The Banana Bread was something I wanted to sample when I first checked out the menu, so I ordered a slice of it. There’s no picture, because I enjoyed it so much after the first bite that I forgot to take one! The bread was warm and needed no additional toppings thanks to it being plenty moist. The hint of brown sugar (I think?) swirled through it made the banana bread a nice balance of sweet and savory.

If you know me, I’m a Yankee. I did not grow up on grits. However, I do like grits when they’re done properly. All too often they’re too dry or too runny. Uptown Cafe exceeded my expectations, providing a fluffy light version that I’ve rarely experienced elsewhere in town. I will go out of my way to order these as a side the next time I visit. I’m just thankful that my wife shared some with me.

Finally, we come to the special of the day. The Blueberry French Toast is a combination of blueberry infused Texas Toast with frosting and maple syrup. Again, I’m totally thankful that my wife shared a bit of it. Without the maple syrup, it’s a great. I didn’t expect improvement with a bit of maple syrup poured on it, but it was even better! If the Blueberry French Toast is offered when you visit Uptown Cafe, I highly recommend it.

I rated Uptown Cafe as “I like it” on Urbanspoon.

I haven’t been there in a while – used to eat the bacon, egg and cheese biscuit regularly for breakfast. Their version has hard-boiled eggs and mayo on it, and was surprisingly addictive. YUM!
